Summer in Metro Vancouver is always chock-a-block full of fantastic community events. This month’s ’5 Great…’ feature recommends five summer events that you should for sure mark in your calendars.
1. Summer Night Market
Richmond’s Summer Night Market is an event that all locals should experience. The 10-acre site is home to a fabulous outdoor market open Friday & Saturday evenings (as well as holiday Sundays) from 7PM – 12AM, and Sundays & holiday Mondays from 7PM – 11PM. Every evening features great local entertainment and events, something for everyone in the family. The market vendors sell anything from sunglasses to toys, jewelry to books and lots of great trinkets. Perhaps the biggest attraction to the Summer Night Market is the plethora of unique food items one can consume. It’s a mouth-watering selection of multicultural delights! Do NOT eat dinner before you go to the Summer Night Market!
2. Bard on the Beach
Bard on the Beach, at Vancouver’s Vanier Park, runs June 2 – September 24, 2011. This not-for-profit Shakespeare Festival features Shakespeare classics performed under Bard Village tents. Richard III, As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice and Henry VI The Wars of the Roses and other great performances will take place under the tents this season. In the past seating has not been reserved, but with Bard on the Beach’s new reserved ticketing system, the line-ups should be minimal this year. Yay! Concession and bar services are on-site for guest’s enjoyment as well.
3. Celebration of Light
Dates for the 2011 Celebration of Light, the 21st Annual (!!!), are July 30th, August 3rd and August 6th. This year China, Spain and Canada will perform and if you’ve been to this event in the past, you know these are three countries that rock the firework displays! Grab a lawn chair, beach blanket, some snacks and some friends and arrive early to claim your seat. Bleacher seats are available for purchase, which is a great way to ensure the best seats in the house! Transit is recommended to get to this event – tens of thousands make their way down to Vancouver fireworks each year and although parking is available, it can be hectic.
4. Blue Mountain Music Festival
This is always a fun, family-friendly event in Coquitlam! The Blue Mountain Music Festival takes place at Blue Mountain Park July 16 – 17, 2011 from 1:00PM – 9:30PM. Admission is by donation. You and your family will enjoy live entertainment, face painting, airbrush tattoos, clowns and other entertainers. Check out this year’s schedule for all of the details and don’t miss this one!
5. Caribbean Days Festival
On July 23-24, 2011, Waterfront Park in North Vancouver is where you will want to be! Join the Trinidad & Tobago Cultural Society of BC as they celebrate Caribbean culture during Caribbean Days Festival. This family-friendly event features the sights, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean with rockin’ live music, family activities, parades and delicious food. Ohhhh, the food (it’s so good)! The multicultural street parade kicks things off on Saturday morning at 10am and it is spectacular! People of all ages will enjoy this lively, colourful event.
