PNE Special: The Story Behind the Deep Fried Pop Tart

Perry Poudreir of Pennsylvania Dutch Funnelcakes likes deep frying things. So much so, that along with his wife (and business partner) he spends hours brainstorming new ideas for sweet new treats for the PNE each year. After the massive success of their deep fried Oreos last year, the duo came up with the idea of deep frying pop tarts – and while they didn’t necessarily sound like something we would enjoy, we really liked them!

After cutting the strawberry Pop Tart on an angle, the pieces are dipped in their famous funnel cake batter (we would share the recipe but there are too many types of flour to remember!). Proud of their batter and the products they serve, Pennsylvania Dutch Funnelcakes encourages customers on the fence about trying to the treat to give it a shot. By using funnelcake batter rather than your typical deep-frying batter, the dough itself absorbs less fat than you might think – leaving you with a less greasy deep fried treat! READ MORE >

Young Naturalists’ Club of BC

Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities on earth yet too often we don’t appreciate its beauty. To help introduce children to the world away from their television and computer screens, there is the Young Naturalists’ Club of BC (YNC). YNC is a nature club for children, ages 5-14, that meets for monthly explorer days. Explorer days range from bird-watching, fossil hunting, to pond dipping for aquatic insects.

The Young Naturalists’ Club of BC was founded when a group of conservationists realized that the younger generation wasn’t getting involved. Founder, Daphne Solecki, says that when she was growing up nature was at her doorstep. READ MORE >
